The Bible says in John 1:9, “The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the
world.” Jesus Christ is the light. The apostle John said that John the Baptist was nothing and
nobody, compared to Jesus Christ. Jesus is the true light that gives light to every man. In other words, Jesus Christ is the gospel. He is revelation. He is the light. John the Baptist is not the gospel. He is not revelation. He is not the light. John the apostle does not engage in a campaign of denigration of John the Baptist. He simply mentioned the true identity of John the Baptist. John the Baptist was not able to do anything at all in overcoming the darkness. It is only Jesus Christ who can dispel the darkness. The antithesis between the light and the
darkness is a natural one whether we are thinking of the physical world or the spiritual world. It is the function of the light to shine precisely in the darkness to oppose the darkness, to dispel the darkness. The opposition of the light and the darkness is a major theme of the whole Gospel of John. “The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it (John 1:5).” The world is darkness. Man is part of the world. Therefore, man is also darkness. Darkness can never become light by itself. Therefore, man cannot become light either by himself or herself. Human beings cannot liberate themselves from darkness. Neither angels nor any human being nor any creation has the power to overcome the darkness. Only Jesus is the light and has the power to dispel the darkness. In other words, only God has the power and authority to defeat the power of the devil, demons, death, and the hell. Therefore, Jesus must be God the Son. If Jesus were not God, he would neither be the true light nor be able to defeat the darkness, the power of the devil, demons, death, and the hell. Christianity would have been collapsed long ago. Therefore, the doctrine of Trinity is the backbone of Christianity. You cannot expel the darkness by yourself at all. You do not have the power to kick out the darkness at all. Only Jesus Christ is the true light because he is God the Son, and only the true light, Jesus Christ, can oppose and dispel the darkness. Therefore, the Bible says, “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life (John 8:12).
